FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Coroner’s Office had identified the victim. The coroner says Corey Appleberry, 29, of Fort Wayne, passed away at a local hospital on Thursday morning.
FWPD officials say that at 7:58 pm, Wednesday, officers responded to reports of gun shots in the 2700 block of Euclid Ave. While officers were responding, they were told that a person had been shot. Officers arrived and located the victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds in the front yard of a residence. Officers performed CPR on Corey Appleberry until paramedics took over care and transported him to a local hospital.
Initial information indicates Appleberry got into some sort of altercation with another adult male, whom he is related to (exact relationship to-be-determined). During the altercation, gunshots were fired, and the victim was struck. The adult male in question remained on scene and is currently being interviewed at the police station. He is being considered a person of interest only at this time. A handgun was also located on scene; investigators are currently unsure of its involvement but are working on piecing everything together.
The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound of the abdomen and his death was ruled a homicide.
Corey Appleberry is the 19th Homicide in Allen County for 2019.
This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
